Realising a sustainable future

Ricoh Europe, London, 03 December 2020 – C.S. Lewis once said, “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” The sentiment that anyone can do good with the world as their witness will forever ring true. Tackling climate change is a prime example.

If there is a silver lining of the pandemic, it’s the opportunity to pause and reflect on sustainability goals and actions to date. Could we all do a little better? The answer most of the time will be ‘yes’. But, I’m proud to work for a company that’s acting on this.
In March, we revised our 2030 global greenhouse gas reduction target from 30% to 63% compared to our 2015 baseline year. In June, we signed the Uniting Business and Governments to Recover Better pledge that ensures Covid-19 recovery plans align to the latest climate change science. And in November, we endorsed the Business for Inclusive Growth’s (B4IG) roadmap to inclusive recovery. In doing this, we pledge to use our expertise to help bridge the digital divide by providing vulnerable communities with access to digital infrastructure, tools, training and skills.
I know working for a global organisation like Ricoh enables us to make such bold moves. But realistically, change can be implemented no matter the size of business. So, I’d encourage others to ask the same question: how can we do better? Here are some considerations:

Work towards a circular economy

One of the biggest sustainability issues is waste. Forecasts show that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. This is largely because plastic use has increased 20-fold in the last 50 years.

The business world has an obligation to help reverse the damage. That’s why Ricoh created the Comet Circle, our own circular economy model. We also introduced a plastic policy for products and packaging materials to use recycled plastic for at least 50% for our imaging products by 2030.

Empower your customers to be more sustainable

Almost nine out of ten consumers want businesses to help them make a difference by being more environmentally friendly and ethical in their daily lives. Increasingly, this means they’re turning to brands and products that are genuinely sustainable.

Companies can make a difference via their customers, too. Ricoh offers affordable and eco-friendly devices and return initiatives, such as Greenline and the Ricoh Resource Smart Return programme. This helps customers to reach their sustainability goals while saving money.

Innovate to serve dual purpose

A staggering 99% of global CEOs say sustainability is important to the future success of their businesses. Meanwhile, three quarters say investment in digital technologies is the key to addressing sustainability issues.

Ricoh is no different. In 2019, we reduced carbon emissions by 23% through energy conservation and the increased use of renewables. In fact, 57% of Ricoh sites across EMEA have switched to 100% renewable energy. Now we’re on track to source 100% of our global energy requirements from renewables well before our target of 2050. As part of our ongoing commitment to solve social issues through business and realise a sustainable society, we have been recognised in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2020 for our strong ESG performance.
Continuing this sort of momentum is vital. With the pandemic speeding up the rate of digital transformation, there’s an exciting opportunity for organisations to drive innovation to support their business and sustainability goals. There really is no time to waste.
